Education is a basic pillar in democratic societies. But what are the roles and responsibilities of educational institutions? Why and how is education important for a functioning democracy? How may education and educational institutions influence the development of democracy in previous autocracies?
The USI network and Alexandria University organized a research seminar 25-27 March 2013 on “The Role of Education in Democratic Societies” where researchers from Swedish universities and Alexandria University presented their research and took part in discussions with Egyptian colleagues on this interesting issue crucial for the development of democracy in Egypt and the region as a whole.
